Interpreters of the painting "Guernica" are aware that it is based off of the Spanish Civil War in that there is a clear suffering displayed in its symbols. Readers of the poem "Guernica" begin to feel a deeper understanding of the artist’s thoughts as he created his painting: “In 'Guernica' the dead children were laid out in order upon the sidewalk.” From this, as well as the rest of the poem, readers gain the knowledge that children were dear to Picasso, demonstrating the chaos the war inflicted upon individuals.
