I just paid the full balance of a collections account on my credit. How do I get it removed now?

I just finished paying off the balance for an open collections account on my credit (the full balance of the account was $60, and it was for a medical bill). How can I get it removed from my credit report now? The company I made the payment to stated that they do not delete accounts from credit reports because it is against their policy, but there has to be a way to make this go away? I'm only 21 and my credit is pitiful for my age because of past due medical bills... From what I understand, even if I pay the full balance and it shows as paid on my report it is still a negative account on my report. Or when I pay the balance will it help my score even if it's on.
